California has become the first state in the U.S to provide health benefits for young adults who are living in the country illegally, AKA, immigrants.
This happens once the democratic Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law on Tuesday which stated that young adults who are 25 years old or younger are eligible for the state’s Medicaid program regardless of their immigration status.
This bill expands the current rules which are including all children under 18 years old and undocumented immigrants.
This plan is expected to cover around 90,000 people and going to cost the taxpayers over 98$ Million.
The United States president, Donald Trump, Called this move: “Crazy”.
He added in a sad tone: “California doesn’t ‘treat their people as well as they treat illegal immigrants.”
He then said: “At what point does it stop? It’s crazy what they are doing, and it’s mean. And it’s very unfair to our citizens, and we’re going to stop it. But we may need an election to stop it, and we may need to get back the House.”
It’s worth mentioning that this law will not provide health benefits to everyone who is 25 or younger but only to those whose income is low enough to qualify.
The immigrants in the country are already under some government funded programs which only cover pregnancies and emergencies.
Democrats had pushed to expand the coverage to even more adults, but Newsom rejected the proposals, saying it would cost about $3.4 billion to provide coverage to all California adults living in the country illegally.
Newsom said to the crowds: “’we’re going to get the rest of that done.”
He then added: “Mark my words, We’re going to make progress next year and the year after on that. That’s what universal health care means. Everybody, not just some folks.”
