The full text of Bouteflika’s letter follows:

“The President of the Constitutional Council,”

I have the honor to officially inform you that I have decided to terminate my term of office as President of the Republic, effective today, Tuesday, 26 Rajab 1440H, corresponding to 2 April 2019.

My intention to take this decision in faith and in anticipation is to contribute to calming the souls and minds of the citizens so that they can move collectively in Algeria to the better future to which they aspire.

I have taken this decision, in order to avoid and prevent verbal wrangling, which, regrettably, undermines the status quo, and avoids turning into dangerous slide-ins to ensure the protection of persons and property, which remains one of the core competencies of the State.

My decision is an expression of my faith in a dignified and dignified Algeria that takes its place and fulfills all its responsibilities in the fold of nations.

In this perspective, I have taken the necessary measures, pursuant to my constitutional prerogatives, as required by the permanence of the State and the sound functioning of its institutions during the transitional period leading to the election of the new President of the Republic.I have sought what I can to strive to strengthen the foundations of national unity and the independence and development of our nation, and to achieve reconciliation among ourselves and our identity and our history.

I wish good, all the best, to the Algerian people. “
