Protesters gathered in Bratislava and cities across Slovakia on Thursday to oppose new legislation they claim could restrict free expression and undermine the work of NGOs.

Demonstrators assembled at Freedom Square in the capital before marching to the presidential palace, urging President Peter Pellegrini to veto the bill.

Similar rallies took place in Banska Bystrica, Kosice, Lucenec, Trnava and Liptovsky Mikulas, with more planned across Slovakia and abroad on Friday.

The law, passed by Parliament on 17 April, requires non-governmental organisations to disclose leadership details and donors contributing over €5,000 annually. Critics argue it breaches constitutional rights and EU regulations.

Pellegrini has until 2 May to make a decision.
