A fast-moving fire tore through a residential area in Oita, southwestern Japan, damaging at least 170 homes and forcing hundreds to evacuate, officials said.

The blaze began Tuesday night near a fishing port amid strong winds and quickly spread into nearby forested areas.

Firefighters worked through the night to contain the flames, while evacuation centers took in displaced residents.

Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that a man in his 70s remains unaccounted for as efforts continue.
