Authorities raised the volcano’s alert status to its highest level and widened the exclusion zone to 8 kilometres from the crater.
The eruption, one of several in recent months, produced over 50 seismic events in just two hours, far above the daily average.
Footage captured towering mushroom-shaped ash plumes, visible from cities up to 150 kilometres away.
No casualties have been reported, but residents have been warned of potential flash floods and falling ash.
The eruption follows a deadly event last November that killed nine people.
