Junior chamber head Shimono Taiju expressed relief at finding no major damage, and looked forward to seeing the streamer fly next spring, in time for the Children’s Day celebration in Kazo.
The koinobori festival, celebrated on 5 May, involves hanging koi carp banners which symbolise strength, health and perseverance and the values that parents wish to transmit to their children, especially boys.
The larger carp represents the parents, while the smaller ones symbolise children. This custom is observed all over Japan, particularly in Tokyo, where spectacular displays can be found in places like Tokyo Midtown and the Tokyo Tower.
